The Short Take
Caymus Special Selection is the flagship Cabernet from one of Napa's most iconic producers. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, opaque purple-black, with dark cassis, espresso, dark chocolate, and velvety tannins. The 2020 is built for 10-20 years in the cellar. $175-225.
The Wagner family has been making Caymus since 1972 and the Special Selection since 1975. This is the wine that taught a generation of collectors what Napa Cabernet could be — dense, plush, unapologetically ripe, and built to last.
The 2020 is classic Caymus. Opaque in the glass. Dark cassis, blackberry compote, espresso, dark chocolate, cedar. The tannins are there but they are polished to the point of silk. It fills your mouth without being heavy. That is the trick, and not many producers pull it off at this concentration.
Is it polarizing? Yes. The natural wine crowd will tell you it is over-oaked. The Burgundy purists will call it a fruit bomb. And it will outlive both criticisms in the cellar. Give it 10-20 years and see who is right.
Pairs With
Prime ribeye, braised short ribs, aged Parmigiano, a milestone.
