The Short Take
Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino is sourced from high-altitude Uco Valley vineyards up to 5,000 feet. Ripe plum, black cherry, violets, dark chocolate, and a mineral finish that separates it from every other Malbec under $40. Nicolás Catena put Argentine wine on the map. This is the proof.
Nicolás Catena did for Argentine Malbec what Robert Mondavi did for Napa Cabernet — he proved it could be world-class. The Adrianna vineyard sits at 5,000 feet in the Uco Valley, and at that altitude the temperature swings between day and night produce fruit with concentration and acidity that lower-elevation Malbec cannot touch.
The 2021 is deep violet-purple. Ripe plum, black cherry, violets — the classic Malbec aromatics — but underneath there is graphite, dark chocolate, and a mineral drive that lifts the wine out of the fruit-bomb category. The tannins are silky, the oak is integrated, and the finish is long.
At $30-40 this competes with wines costing $80-100 from Napa or Bordeaux. If your cellar does not have an Argentine section, this is where it starts.
