The Short Take

Château de Beaucastel is the benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Unlike most producers who lean on Grenache, Beaucastel uses all 13 permitted varieties with a heavy emphasis on Mourvèdre, giving it savory depth that rewards 20+ years of cellaring. The 2022 scored 97 points from James Suckling. Dark cherries, spice, licorice, chocolate, and refined tannins.

Beaucastel uses all 13 permitted Châteauneuf varieties, but the soul of this wine is Mourvèdre — around 40% in most vintages. That is what separates it from every other producer in the appellation. Where Grenache gives you fruit, Mourvèdre gives you structure, savory depth, and a gamey complexity that only reveals itself after years in the cellar. The 2022 is exceptional. Dark wild berries, spices, licorice, chocolate. Full-bodied but finessed. The tannins are ripe and refined — solid yet gentle. James Suckling gave it 97 points and I do not disagree. This is not a wine you drink young. It is a wine you lay down and forget about for a decade. When you open it in 2032 or 2035, it will be one of the best bottles you have ever had. That is the Beaucastel promise, and they have been keeping it for generations.
