The Short Take

Domaine Drouhin Oregon is the Drouhin family of Beaune's Oregon estate, planted in 1987. The result is Pinot Noir with a French soul and an Oregon accent — black cherry, dried violets, cranberry, and earthy depth. Scored 93 points at $46. Arguably the best value in serious American Pinot Noir.

The Drouhin family has been making wine in Beaune since 1880. In 1987 they planted an estate in Dundee Hills, Oregon, because they saw something in the soil that reminded them of home. Four generations of Burgundian winemaking crossed the Atlantic and landed here. Black cherry, ripe sour cherry, dried violets, roasted coffee. Fresh raspberry and cranberry on the palate with a decidedly earthy, almost Burgundian touch. Bold wildflowers and fall spice in concentrated, layered fashion. Elegant now, but five to twelve years of cellaring will take it further. At $46 for 93-point wine, this is arguably the best value in serious American Pinot Noir. The bottle that proves Oregon belongs in the conversation with Burgundy — and it has a Burgundy family name on the label to settle the argument.
Pairs With

Duck confit, herb-crusted rack of lamb, wild mushroom tart, aged Époisses.
