Custom wine cellars range from $15,000 for a small reach-in to over $500,000 for large walk-in vaults with glass walls, custom millwork, and commercial cooling. The biggest cost drivers are racking material, glass enclosures, climate control, and lighting. Most Bijou builds land between $45,000 and $180,000.
The Real Cost of a Custom Wine Cellar
There is no single answer because every cellar is different. A 200-bottle reach-in closet conversion is a different universe from a 3,000-bottle walk-in vault with glass walls and a tasting nook. But I can give you the ranges we see every week at Bijou — real numbers from real builds, not the vague estimates most companies hide behind.
Reach-In Closets: $15,000 – $35,000
Convert a closet or under-stair space into a climate-controlled wine closet. Includes insulation, vapor barrier, a through-wall or ducted cooling unit, and simple racking. This is the entry point for serious storage — not a wine fridge, but a proper conditioned space.
Small Wine Rooms: $35,000 – $80,000
A dedicated room with custom racking, proper climate control, lighting design, and a finished aesthetic. Most of these hold 500–1,200 bottles. You are choosing between wood species, metal finishes, stone or brick accent walls, and whether you want a glass door or a solid one.
Walk-In Vaults & Glass Walls: $80,000 – $250,000+
This is where cellars become architecture. Glass-enclosed walls, custom millwork, stone floors, integrated lighting, and commercial-grade cooling systems. These builds often involve structural engineering, HVAC coordination, and weeks of on-site installation.
What Drives the Price?
- Racking material — metal racking costs less than hand-finished walnut or mahogany
- Glass enclosures — tempered, insulated glass walls add $15,000–$60,000 depending on size
- Cooling systems — through-wall units start at $2,500; ducted commercial systems run $8,000–$25,000+
- Lighting — LED accent lighting is affordable; programmable scene lighting adds up
- Finishing details — stone, brick, custom doors, and tasting nooks add complexity and cost
The best advice I give clients: tell your builder your real budget and your real bottle count. A good designer can maximize either one.
