What Materials Are Best for Wine Cellar Racking?

The Short Answer

The best wine cellar racking materials are redwood, mahogany, walnut, and metal (steel or aluminum). Redwood is the traditional choice — naturally rot-resistant and aromatic. Metal racking offers a modern aesthetic and maximum airflow. Avoid pine, particle board, and anything with strong chemical finishes that can taint wine.

The Material Defines the Cellar

Racking is not just storage — it is the visual identity of your cellar. The material you choose determines the aesthetic, the durability, the maintenance requirements, and a significant portion of the cost. Choose well and your racking will outlast you.

Wood Racking

Redwood

The classic choice. Naturally resistant to rot and insects, dimensionally stable in humid environments, and has a warm reddish tone that deepens with age. Redwood has been the default cellar racking material for decades and for good reason.

Mahogany

Harder and denser than redwood with a richer, darker grain. Resists moisture well and takes stain beautifully if you want a specific color match. Premium choice for traditional cellars.

Walnut

The luxury option. Deep chocolate tones, tight grain, and a presence that makes a cellar feel like fine furniture. More expensive than redwood or mahogany, but the visual impact is unmistakable.

Metal Racking

Powder-coated steel or anodized aluminum racking is the modern choice. Clean lines, minimal visual weight, and maximum airflow around bottles. Metal racking works especially well in glass-enclosed cellars where you want the wine — not the racking — to be the visual focus.

What to Avoid

  • Pine — too soft, absorbs moisture, warps in cellar conditions
  • Particle board or MDF — breaks down in humidity, releases formaldehyde
  • Heavily varnished wood — off-gassing can taint wine over time
  • Untreated mild steel — rusts in cellar humidity
