A custom wine cellar takes 6–16 weeks from design approval to completion. Small reach-in conversions take 4–6 weeks. Mid-size wine rooms take 8–12 weeks. Large walk-in vaults with glass walls and custom millwork take 12–16+ weeks. Design and engineering add 2–4 weeks before construction begins.
Realistic Timelines
Every client asks this question in the first meeting, and I always give the same honest answer: longer than you hope, shorter than you fear. A custom wine cellar is not a weekend project. It involves structural work, climate engineering, custom fabrication, and precision installation. Rushing any of those stages means compromising the result.
Design Phase: 2–4 Weeks
Site assessment, 3D rendering, material selection, engineering specifications, and revisions. This is where we get the design right before a single piece is cut.
Reach-In Closet Conversion: 4–6 Weeks
Framing, insulation, vapor barrier, cooling unit, racking, lighting, and finishing. The scope is contained and the materials are simpler.
Mid-Size Wine Room: 8–12 Weeks
Custom racking fabrication (often 4–6 weeks alone), structural modifications, HVAC installation, glass door or feature wall, stone or tile flooring, lighting design, and final climate commissioning.
Large Walk-In Vault: 12–16+ Weeks
Glass fabrication, custom millwork, commercial cooling system, structural engineering, multi-trade coordination, and extensive finishing. The glass alone can take 4–6 weeks to fabricate and temper.
What Causes Delays?
- Custom glass fabrication — tempered, insulated panels have long lead times
- Permit approvals — varies by municipality, typically 1–3 weeks
- Material availability — exotic woods and specialty hardware can extend timelines
- Design changes mid-build — the biggest delay, and the most avoidable
