The Short Take
Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino is the junior wine from the estate that invented Brunello. 100% Sangiovese, released younger than their Brunello but with the same DNA — cherry, leather, dried herbs, and a finesse that few Rossos can match. Under $45 from the most historic estate in Montalcino.
Biondi-Santi invented Brunello di Montalcino. That is not marketing — it is history. The Riserva from here is one of the longest-lived wines in Italy and costs accordingly. The Rosso is the same vineyard, same grape, same winemaking philosophy, released after one year in oak instead of four.
Cherry, dried herbs, leather, a hint of orange peel. It is lighter than the Brunello but it has the same elegance — the same sense that every element is exactly where it should be. Nothing extra. Nothing missing.
If you went to Tuscany and fell in love with Sangiovese, this is the bottle you bring home and drink while you wait for the Brunellos to age.
