The Short Take
Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2020 is the best introduction to serious Barolo you can buy. Rose, tar, dried cherry, iron, and the kind of tannic structure that promises a decade of evolution. At $50-65 it is already a steal. The new 15% tariff on Italian imports means this bottle is about to cross $75. Stock up while the math still works.
Every time I walk a client through their new cellar for the first time, I bring a bottle. Something that sets the tone. Last week I brought the Vietti Castiglione. Opened it in a 1,200-bottle room we had just finished in Bee Cave. It was the right call.
Vietti is a name every Piedmont collector knows but not enough people outside Italy talk about. The Castiglione is their village-level Barolo. Fruit from multiple vineyards around Castiglione Falletto, blended so it drinks younger than most Barolo without losing the seriousness. Rose petal, tar, dried cherry, a mineral edge like wet iron. Three years in your cellar and it starts to sing. Twelve years and it is transcendent.
Here is the problem. At $50-65 this was already a steal. The tariff pushes it toward $75-80 and at that price it is competing with single-vineyard Barolos that have more specificity. The sweet spot disappears. Buy the case now at the old number. Open one too early. Wait on the rest. You will not find this value again.
