The Short Take
Ridge Monte Bello 2019 is one of the greatest Cabernet-based wines made in America. From limestone vineyards above the fog line in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it ages for decades and routinely beats classified Bordeaux in blind tastings. This is a cellar cornerstone.
Monte Bello won the 2006 Judgment of Paris re-tasting against first-growth Bordeaux. Not a fluke. The vineyard sits at 2,600 feet on limestone — the same rock that makes Burgundy and Champagne what they are. Paul Draper built this wine over five decades and the current team has not missed a step.
The 2019 is dark, structured, precise. Cassis, graphite, dried sage, iron. It does not taste like Napa. It does not taste like Bordeaux. It tastes like the mountain it came from. Give it 10-20 years and it will reward every month you waited.
Expensive? Yes. Worth it? If you are building a cellar that means something, Monte Bello is one of the bottles that belongs in it.
