The Short Take

Quinta do Crasto Late Bottled Vintage Port 2019 is the gateway to understanding Port. Dense black fruit, chocolate, dried fig, walnut, and a sweetness that is balanced by real tannic structure rather than just sugar. From one of the Douro's most respected quintas. Under $24 and it will outlast most of what is in your cellar right now.

Most wine cellars have no Port. This is a mistake. Port is not a dessert wine for people who do not know what they want. It is a fortified wine from one of the world's most dramatic vineyard landscapes. Schist-terraced hillsides above the Douro River, summer heat so extreme the grapes concentrate into something that tastes like the whole vintage compressed into a glass. Quinta do Crasto is the estate I recommend when someone wants to start. Family-owned, historically important, and they make an LBV that is genuinely superior to most of the Port on the market at this price. Dense black cherry, plum, chocolate, dried fig, a walnut quality on the finish. The sweetness is real but balanced by tannin and acid. This is not syrup. It is a structured wine that happens to be rich. Serve it with aged Stilton and a fire going and you have solved November. Keep a few in the cellar and open them at the end of a long dinner. That is what they were made for.
Pairs With

Aged Stilton, dark chocolate, walnuts, a fire in November.
