The Short Take

Pierre Gimonnet is a family grower Champagne from Premier Cru Chardonnay in Cuis, Côte des Blancs — farming since 1935. Blanc de Blancs, meaning 100% Chardonnay. Crisp green apple, citrus zest, chalky mineral edge, and toasty character from reserve wines. Scored 92 points at $55. This is the other side of Champagne — terroir-driven, chalk-inflected, made by the people who actually farm the vines.

The grower Champagne movement exists to prove that small, family-run estates can outperform the big houses. Pierre Gimonnet is the proof. This family has been farming Premier Cru Chardonnay in Cuis since 1935. They do not buy grapes. They grow them. Pale straw with platinum reflections and fine tiny bubbles. Clean, precise — crisp green apple, citrus zest, faint white flowers. The palate is squeaky clean with a chalky mineral edge that tastes like the limestone it grew in. Toasty, slightly nutty character from the reserve wines. This is Champagne that tastes like a place, not a brand. Krug and Veuve Clicquot are already in the collection. Gimonnet represents the other side of Champagne — where the land matters more than the label. At $55, this embarrasses most NV grande marque bottlings. The sommeliers know. Now you do too.
