The Short Take

Emiliana Coyam 2021 is one of the most decorated biodynamic wines in the Southern Hemisphere. A Syrah-led blend with Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot from Demeter-certified vineyards in Colchagua Valley, Chile. Dark plum, cocoa, cassis, black pepper, a structured tannic spine. At $25-32 this is one of the best values in biodynamic wine anywhere.

Emiliana is one of the largest Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyards in the world and almost nobody in the United States has heard of them. That is a mistake I am trying to help people fix. Colchagua Valley, about two hours south of Santiago, coastal influence tempering the Andean heat, fruit farmed with cow horns and compost teas and everything else the doctrine demands. Coyam is their flagship blend. Syrah-dominant, with Carmenère doing the distinctively Chilean heavy lifting, and Merlot, Cab, and Petit Verdot rounding it out. Dark plum, cocoa, cassis, cracked black pepper, a tannic spine that tells you this wants to sit in a cellar for five years if you have the discipline. Most people do not. I opened one a month ago for a Sunday dinner in Austin and the bottle did not survive the evening. Here is the part that matters. At $25-32 this competes with biodynamic wines from France and Italy that cost twice as much. Chile is still undervalued because the wine world has not adjusted its map. Buy a case while that is still true. In ten years Emiliana will cost $60 and people will talk about it like they talked about Concha y Toro in 2005.
